DJ SS and The Prototypes in KL 12th January 2018

DJ SS and The Prototypes in KL 12 January 2018

Perhaps THE BIGGEST line up of drum’n’bass DJs in just one gig in recent years here in KL is set to feature this JANUARY 12 2018 at Pisco Bar KL.

Loops Collective returns with heavyweight international drum’n’bass music in 2018 featuring the super long awaited return of The World of Drum & Bass’s legendary founder DJ SS (UK), together with one of the most recognised names among the “new breed” of drum’n’bass artistes, The Prototypes (UK).

One of the UK’s finest DJ/Producers and co-founder of Formation Records, now celebrating it’s 27 year Anniversary making it the longest running drum’n’bass label on the planet. DJ SS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today’s drum’n’bass sound.

SS is one of the very select DJ / Producers who has been there right from the start, due to the hard work and dedication that he puts into his music.

When the hardcore scene exploded SS was there and hasn’t looked back. He and his partner Eidris started promoting their own parties called Total Kaos every Friday in their hometown of Leicester. They also put on one of the first large indoor parties at Donnington Park in the summer of 91. It was an amazing success and 6000 people danced till dawn.

DJ SS, himself born and bred in Leicester is a self-taught scratch DJ and found fame scratching his way through the era along with break-dancing his way on the streets of Leicester. He progressed onto the “rave scene” and was one of the first on the worldwide scene to DJ his own produced tracks. Things moved quickly from there – SS taught himself how to produce a high calibre of music and also coached others to produce to equally high standards.

DJ SS has an enormous list of tracks and used various aliases. Over the years he’s had countless releases on Formation Records as well as doing remix work for other artistes. He has released such tracks as ‘The Psycho E.P’, ‘Rhythm For Reasons’, ‘Breakbeat Pressure’, the Drum & Bass anthem ‘Black’, with the highlight being ‘ Lighter’ which was Formation Records best seller, reaching the number 1 spot in the Music Week dance chart and reaching number 68 in the music charts. It is a track that has remained incredibly popular and still continues to be played years on.

Not only has his label Formation during the years had many big tunes released, they have also had many big DJ/producers release records on the label. The list is strong, big and endless including Carl Cox, Grooverider, Shy FX, Ray Keith, Bryan Gee, Frost, Roni Size, Krust, Kenny Ken, Ratty, Matrix, John B, Mickey Finn, Twisted Individual and Distorted Minds.

In between this huge success he has also been the driving force behind some of the finest talent now established within the scene, his most recent sensation arriving in the form of Twisted Individual, who had made a huge impact on the scene with releases on Formation Records and sister labels Reformed and New Identity, as well as his debut album Tooled Up. He has also convinced Zen, old friend of Twisted Individual, to take the plunge and move from London to Leicester to join the Formation team after several releases on 5HQ Recordings and the last couple of years has seen his debut appearance on Formation Records with Minefield as part of the 100th release, and sister labels Reformed and New Identity.

Adding to the successful list of A&R projects, DJ SS is also responsible for launching the careers of successful artists like John B, Greenlaw, Multi Platinum selling artists Nero, and is continuing on that path bringing on new blood.

Fast forwarding to 2015 saw Formation events team up with the UK’s premier event company, Outbreak Festival to host Formation & World of Drum&Bass Arenas at their massives. Simultaneously DJ SS has built his World of Drum&Bass brand to become the biggest Drum&Bass events in Russia averaging over 4-6,000 people per show.

Into 2018 and Formation Records will be releasing a landmark 200th release along side another summer compilation that are both sure to reach the #1 spot in the store charts. DJ SS continues to work on all of these projects both with his production and curation. Keep on the lookout for the next official world tour in the works.

While the boys have been around since the turn of this decade, it was at the end of 2012 that saw The Prototypes come to prominence with the big euphoric dancefloor track ‘Suffocate’ on Shogun Audio. which received support from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Andy C, Roni Size, Friction, J Majik & Wickaman, Pendulum, and DJ Fresh.

2013 saw the duo sign an album deal with Futurebound’s Viper Recordings. The first single from the album ‘Pale Blue Dot’ held the No 1 spot on the Beatport dnb chart for over a month with DJ support from Netsky, Chase & Status, Pendulum, Sub Focus, Sigma, TC, & more.

2014 has seen them go from strength to strength with ‘Just Bounce’ featured on Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ album, the duo being signed to Primary Talent Agency and a summer residency on BBC Xtra Talent. The live gigs have grown with tours across the US, Australia, NZ, South Africa and Japan.

2015 and The Prototypes released their debut album ‘City of Gold’ in May on Viper Recordings featuring vocals from Ayak, Donae’o, Ayah Marar, Laconic, MAD HEAD CITY and Amy Pearson. The City of Gold album tour encompass over 50 dates and will see the guys playing at NASS, Urban Art Forms and the Tomorrowland festivals.

It’s not hard to see why the future has never been brighter for one of the most exciting production outfits in recent years.

The event will also feature FOUR of Malaysia’s best in drum’n’bass, including Loops Collective founder DJ Low, and fellow collective members Ken DMA, Mac and Yikzz.

DJ Low: Club event promoter, DJ academy owner and Malaysian drum’n’bass pioneer, DJ Low has been in the forefront of the local clubbing industry for 18 years now and under the Loops Collective banner, which he co-founded in 1999, chalks up a hefty list of A-grade artistes in the genre who have graced out shores this year, including the likes of Andy C, LTJ Bukem, Alix Perez and Black Sun Empire.  House wise, he’s co-founded the House of Chemistry nights and he’s also label head to the now increasingly active Take Off Records, which is beginning to see releases in the music range of beats, bass, drum’n’bass, house, breaks and more.

Le Noir KL presents GOLDIE, 30th April

By J-Sun

Le Noir KL presents the return of the iconic music pioneer, drum’n’bass icon, DJ and producer GOLDIE (Metalheadz) on Labour Day Eve (APRIL 30) in Club Lounge.

Goldie’s career to date is unparalleled. He is a pioneering DJ, songwriter, producer, and visual artist, as well as an actor and orchestral composer and conductor: a modern-day renaissance man. In 2012, he was selected as one of the BBC’s “New Elizabethans”: a selection of 60 people – including David Hockney, Roald Dahl, David Bowie and Tim Berners-Lee – who have helped shape British culture during the reign of Elizabeth II. Four years later, he was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

Goldie is also one of only a handful of artistes ever to co-write with David Bowie – on the track Truth from the drum‘n’bass pioneer’s second album, Saturnz Return. The album also featured distinguished collaborators such as Noel Gallagher and KRS-One.

Thirty years it has been since he started his journey and now news is out that his new album The Journey Man is due for release on June 16.  The album comprises two parts, with 16 brand new tracks all written and produced by Goldie, featuring a host of collaborations handpicked by the man himself. The lead single from the album I Adore You (Goldie vs Ulterior Motive) is already out on Spotify.

Collaborators on The Journey Man album include vocalist and songwriter Natalie Duncan, who was discovered when chosen in the three-part BBC series Goldie’s Band By Royal Appointment and later provided the vocals for Goldie’s 2012 single ‘Freedom’. Other featured vocalists on the album include Terri Walker, Tyler Lee Daly, Natalie Williams, José James, Naomi Pryor as well as Goldie’s wife, Mika Wassenaar Price.

Goldie is self creativity, new life, mystical union; otherwise known as alchemy and he’s coming back in Malaysia for the third time in the last eight months for a now almost regular appearance at Le Noir KL.

Once again, as he has done so many times when Goldie visits Malaysian shores, Malaysian dum’n’bass veteran DJ Low and DJ Mac of Loops Collective will feature on support.

James Lavelle’s UNKLE

In 1996 Mo’ Wax released one of electronic music’s most celebrated albums, DJ Shadow’s seminal Endtroducing.….. Soon after this Lavelle started work on an album with DJ Shadowunder the name UNKLE.

The resulting release Psyence Fiction featured collaborations with Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Mike D, Badly Drawn Boy, Ian Brown (The Stone Roses) and Thom Yorke (Radiohead).

In 2003, he released a follow-up to Psyence Fiction, titled Never, Never, Land, though this album saw DJ Shadow replaced by Richard File as the second full-time member of UNKLE. It featured collaborations with 3D of Massive Attack and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age among others.

The James Lavelle musical revolution has gone full circle and that big wheel just keeps on turning.

Wonderfruit ‘17 Brings Rudimental, Young Fathers, Shura, Lianne La Havas + More To Thailand With New Sustainability Initiatives And Thrilling Art Installations

Originally scheduled for December 2016, Thailand’s globally conscious, boutique camping festival Wonderfruit made the decision to postpone until this Thursday February 16-19, 2017 to honour the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and respect the country;s mourning period. Returning once again to The Fields at Siam Country Club in Pattaya, the event will include musicians from around the globe, stunning art installations, a stage made out of harvested rice, acclaimed chefs, engaging talks and workshops, parkour lessons, and an interactive area for kids to learn and play.

Above all, the primary focus of Wonderfruit is on helping to build towards a sustainable future. Beyond going carbon neutral for the first time by donating a portion of profits from ticket sales to the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Indonesia, the festival is also helping to restore a mangrove forest in the vulnerable delta region of Myanmar with the help of Worldview International Foundation (WIF) and Heyerdahl Mangrove Coin (HMC). During Wonderfruit, you’ll notice a “green” drink priced at a dollar more and served in a special cup. For every green drink ordered, proceeds will go directly to the climate park
where another mangrove tree will be planted in a special Wonderfruit Forest area.

As for their eclectic music lineup, Wonderfruit has artistes including live drum-and- bass ensemble Rudimental, Scottish hip-hop trio and Mercury Award recipients for Best Album Young Fathers, rising UK vocalist and producer Shura, Grammy-nominated singer Lianne La Havas, Brooklyn indie duo Buke and Gase, and more including JUNUN featuring Shye Ben Tzur & The Rajasthan Express, Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra, and Mad Professor. New additions include Los Angeles-based DJ and producer Sabo with many more TBA soon.

Complementing the visionary music lineup, Wonderfruit will also offer audiences the opportunity to interact with a myriad of uniquely crafted stage designs. Celebrating Thailand's rich farming culture, The Farm Stage from creators PO-D Architects x Thor Kaichon will be decorated using harvested rice and feature a diverse lineup of musicians and performing artists. Next up is the Solar Stage from Burning Man favorite Gregg Fleishman, whose geometric approach to design will be the focal point of sunrise and sunset sets. Other highlights include the Molam Bus from Jim Thompson Arts Center, showcasing a unique genre of Thai folk music in a converted bus that acts as a stage and interactive cultural exhibition. Beyond the beauteous stage designs, guests of Wonderfruit will also experience a bevy of electrifying art installations throughout the festival grounds. Highlights will include a secluded multi-sensory chime environment called Wonder Lily Island from creator Moral Turgeman with surprise performances and ceremonial tastings; a Cocoon Playground from Waft Lab that is scheduled to include complex
audiovisual workshops and performances; rock-like objects created by Ada Chirakranont, and a blazing display of light animations and DJ sets at Bonafide from ZIEGHT x Iconic Studio.

Guests seeking out thrilling performance pieces will be delighted by an improvised mixture of dance, martial arts, physical theater and painting from Ulrich Gottlieb and his project #Touch; a breathtaking combination of flame-spinning and aerial hoop acrobatics from Somphot Thongyuak and Alexandra; spectacular circus arts from renowned performer Reprizzo, and a galactic puppet installation from Australian visual arts team Sight By Storm. Guests interested in becoming their own work of art can also step into Wonder Salon to create outlandish fantasy accessories or undergo fabulous face and body painting from Wonderfruit’s talented team of stylists.

Built on six unique pillars, Wonderfruit is more than a festival, but rather a journey that begins the moment
you enter The Fields at Siam Country Club. This year, the site will be transformed into an experiential
playground packed with 60+ music acts from all over the globe, 20+ stunning art installations and
dazzling theatrical performances, 55 exquisite gastronomic delights, 30+ engaging talks & workshops,
35+ wellness & adventures offerings, plus plenty of interactive activities for the whole family – all
intertwined to create an immersive experience for Wonderers.

Since its inception, Wonderfruit has always thrived to bring a diverse, genre-bending lineup of liveperformers that span the musical spectrum, and this year is no exception with numerous musical acts from around the world. The Living Stage will be home to notable and diverse mainstage acts from head bangers like Rudimental, famous for their heavy hitting beats and Young Fathers, a hip-hop trio from Scotland, to the eclectic likes of Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra with their mesmerizing blend of live orchestral and electronic music, Shura, famous for her new wave synthesized sounds and soothing vocals and Grammy nominated singer, Lianne La Havas.

Those not ready to call it a night, will most likely end up at The Quarry, Wonderfruit’s legendary after party destination. Get ready to dance till you drop to genre-defying sounds by Simian Mobile Disco and the distinctive tunes of European electronica by Yaya; or brace yourselves for some heavy hitting techno by Nicole Moudaber and a dark, hardware-only live set from Headless Horseman. Those who just woke up or haven’t slept yet, can climb up the Solar Stage, at the highest point of The Fields, built by Gregg Fleishman, who’s known for his creations at Burning Man, to catch unforgettable sunrise scenes. The Solar Stage will host the performances from Eric Volta, Sabo, YokoO and sunrise yoga with Liv Lo and Rosemary, while sunset performances will be hosted by Wolf + Lamb, Norman Jay MBE, KMLN, Marc Antona, Akimbo and more. Farm Stage, another must-see this year, will see acts like Buke and Gase, Superglasses Ska Ensemble, Yena, Sahai Hang Sailom, Srirajah Rockers, At Adau, Nang Talung Sakon Dharma and more.

Wonderers are also in for a treat as Forbidden Fruit hosts Wonderfruit’s first ever gay party on Friday night. “Adam and Steve” features Thailand's premier drag queen, the inimitable Pangina Heals, who’ll delight revelers with her “waacking” performances, outrageous entertainment and plenty of surprises. The appropriately fabulous venue will also be the setting for irresistible music from Luna City Express, Noxro and Uone throughout Wonderfruit, as well as the Malaysian based CEE.

The Rainforest Pavilion is where Scratch Talks will take place during the day. Get inspired by the talks from Trash Hero Thailand, the man behind Indonesian unicorn app GO-JEK and more. At night, the Pavilion will delight Wonderers with some techno beats from Agent H, Alex Joy, Cabbit, Zig Zach, Fadi, Gary Hutchings, Halim Ardie, small&Tall Soundsystem featuring Swamy and David Brabbins and other. Guests interested in expanding their worldview can take part in the Scratch Talks speaker series with a talk from Eddie Brock to discuss his project Real Island Life, which focuses on rebuilding island communities through sustainable education. Other talks will include EnVision Corporation CEO Todd Lemons speaking on sustainable technologies, Natural Capital Alliance founder Alan Laubsch touching on the use of Bitcoin's revolutionary Blockchain technology, Dr. Andy Cornish sharing stories of his work with sharks and stingrays, and Trash Hero elaborating on their remarkable beach cleanup campaigns.

As well as sustainable, Wonderfruit is also big on technology and safety. The event is completely cashless and all Wonderers will receive an RFID wristband, making paying easier and eliminating the need to worry about the safety of your wallet. The wristbands, courtesy of Bangkok Bank, can be topped up at stations around the festival.
Wonderfruit takes place at The Fields at Siam Country Club, Pattaya from 16 to 19 February 2017. Four-
day passes can currently be purchased at 5,500 baht. Visit Wonderfruit’s website for more information on
securing your tickets, travel, and accommodations.
