Toolroom Records head honcho Mark Knight returns to Kuala Lumpur for the first time in three years as part of an Asian string of appearances over the next couple of weeks.
Art Xtreme Media presents Mark Knight (Toolroom, UK) at Kyo KL, on Thursday, 10 May 2018.
Mark Knight has proven a rare and wonderful breed of musical heavyweight. The second highest-selling Beatport artist of all time (with no less than eight No.1’s) his career has spanned more than a decade, with releases on a diverse range of labels such as Suara, 1605, Stereo and of course his own Toolroom. Despite his success, the Grammy-nominated artist has never rested on the laurels of being one of the industry’s most respected and accomplished international players, and continues to push boundaries and set new standards with each year that passes.
Armed with a musical library that knows no boundaries, a consistent run of hits and chart-topping ventures alike, the success of Knight’s recording career is matched only by the credibility and integrity maintained throughout his discography to date. Heard through a spread of anthems (‘Man With The Red Face,’ ‘Alright’, ‘Downpipe’) along with producing bands such as Faithless and Underworld has sealed a diverse musical heritage for the accomplished producer. It’s music for passion, not numbers, and it’s what Mark Knight does best.
2015 was a landmark year for Mark Knight. His track ‘Second Story’ on Suara was crowned an Essential New Tune by Radio 1’s Pete Tong, and went on to be one of the biggest records of the summer: another welcome accolade from the national broadcaster following Mark’s induction into Radio 1’s Hall of Fame earlier in the year.
That year also saw the release of ‘A Year In The Life’: a collection of highlights from Mark’s illustrious career. All proceeds were donated to the children’s charity War Child, while alongside the album, a feature-length fly-on-the-wall documentary – filmed over the space of an entire year – was released in January 2016.
2016 marked some of Mark Knight’s strongest work to date. The key mantra has been about Mark stripping back his music and going back to his roots, creating more underground, club ready tracks.
Founded in 2004 and responsible for championing a wealth of talent from across the industry spectrum, the award-winning Toolroom Records remains a key component in the life and times of Mark Knight. Having spearheaded the label’s new direction over the past few years as part of their pivotal #RESET campaign, Knight continues to have a leading role within one of the UK’s biggest independent record labels.
Notable in 2016 was the label’s shift to focus less on singles and more on developing artists and releasing albums. Toolroom has dominated the Beatport charts for over a decade with its forward-thinking house and techno releases, but with albums from Adrian Hour and Weiss, embarks on a new chapter in its continuing evolution.
Alongside his bountiful studio output, Knight has continued to grow his much loved radio presence, with Toolroom Radio reaching over 13.5 million people in 60 countries across the world, all tuning in each week to hear Mark’s records of choice, while on iTunes Toolroom Radio was named in the top 20 most influential podcast by Digital Music News based on number of subscribers. Knight also remains a firm fixture on the worldwide touring circuit with a number of key residencies around the world under the Toolroom Live banner and performances at dance music bastions Space Ibiza and Amnesia as well as a host of landmark festivals. With all this in mind, it’s no wonder the Toolroom man has deservedly maintained his status as an indispensable asset to modern dance music.
Into 2018, and brand new music from him alongside good friend Adrian Hour includes part of a two track EP forthcoming on Nic Faniculli’s Saved Records on 11th May, with a Toolroom 15 Anniversary World Tour coming soon.
But before that, Mark Knight’s two- week Asia tour looks like this:
2 May: Joule, Osaka
3 May: Bijou, Fukuoka
4 May: Womb, Shibuyu-ka, Tokyo
5 May: Together Festival, Bangkok
9 May: Mulia, Bali
10 May: Kyo, Kuala Lumpur
11 May: EVT, Colosseum, Jakarta
12 May: Pacha, Macau
Featuring for the night as well will be Knight’s Toolroom cohort and label A&R man Matt Smallwood (Toolroom, UK) and Kyo KL co-founer and resident Axel Groove.

DJ SS and The Prototypes in KL 12 January 2018
Perhaps THE BIGGEST line up of drum’n’bass DJs in just one gig in recent years here in KL is set to feature this JANUARY 12 2018 at Pisco Bar KL.
Loops Collective returns with heavyweight international drum’n’bass music in 2018 featuring the super long awaited return of The World of Drum & Bass’s legendary founder DJ SS (UK), together with one of the most recognised names among the “new breed” of drum’n’bass artistes, The Prototypes (UK).
One of the UK’s finest DJ/Producers and co-founder of Formation Records, now celebrating it’s 27 year Anniversary making it the longest running drum’n’bass label on the planet. DJ SS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today’s drum’n’bass sound.
SS is one of the very select DJ / Producers who has been there right from the start, due to the hard work and dedication that he puts into his music.
When the hardcore scene exploded SS was there and hasn’t looked back. He and his partner Eidris started promoting their own parties called Total Kaos every Friday in their hometown of Leicester. They also put on one of the first large indoor parties at Donnington Park in the summer of 91. It was an amazing success and 6000 people danced till dawn.
DJ SS, himself born and bred in Leicester is a self-taught scratch DJ and found fame scratching his way through the era along with break-dancing his way on the streets of Leicester. He progressed onto the “rave scene” and was one of the first on the worldwide scene to DJ his own produced tracks. Things moved quickly from there – SS taught himself how to produce a high calibre of music and also coached others to produce to equally high standards.
DJ SS has an enormous list of tracks and used various aliases. Over the years he’s had countless releases on Formation Records as well as doing remix work for other artistes. He has released such tracks as ‘The Psycho E.P’, ‘Rhythm For Reasons’, ‘Breakbeat Pressure’, the Drum & Bass anthem ‘Black’, with the highlight being ‘ Lighter’ which was Formation Records best seller, reaching the number 1 spot in the Music Week dance chart and reaching number 68 in the music charts. It is a track that has remained incredibly popular and still continues to be played years on.
Not only has his label Formation during the years had many big tunes released, they have also had many big DJ/producers release records on the label. The list is strong, big and endless including Carl Cox, Grooverider, Shy FX, Ray Keith, Bryan Gee, Frost, Roni Size, Krust, Kenny Ken, Ratty, Matrix, John B, Mickey Finn, Twisted Individual and Distorted Minds.
In between this huge success he has also been the driving force behind some of the finest talent now established within the scene, his most recent sensation arriving in the form of Twisted Individual, who had made a huge impact on the scene with releases on Formation Records and sister labels Reformed and New Identity, as well as his debut album Tooled Up. He has also convinced Zen, old friend of Twisted Individual, to take the plunge and move from London to Leicester to join the Formation team after several releases on 5HQ Recordings and the last couple of years has seen his debut appearance on Formation Records with Minefield as part of the 100th release, and sister labels Reformed and New Identity.
Adding to the successful list of A&R projects, DJ SS is also responsible for launching the careers of successful artists like John B, Greenlaw, Multi Platinum selling artists Nero, and is continuing on that path bringing on new blood.
Fast forwarding to 2015 saw Formation events team up with the UK’s premier event company, Outbreak Festival to host Formation & World of Drum&Bass Arenas at their massives. Simultaneously DJ SS has built his World of Drum&Bass brand to become the biggest Drum&Bass events in Russia averaging over 4-6,000 people per show.
Into 2018 and Formation Records will be releasing a landmark 200th release along side another summer compilation that are both sure to reach the #1 spot in the store charts. DJ SS continues to work on all of these projects both with his production and curation. Keep on the lookout for the next official world tour in the works.
The Prototypes are UK based producers and DJs, Chris Garvey and Nick White. The Protoypes exploded in 2014 with the guys gaining four Beatport No1 is a row with Abyss VIP, Pale Blue Dot, Humanoid, and Moscow. Their debut album was out May 2015 on Viper Recordings.
While the boys have been around since the turn of this decade, it was at the end of 2012 that saw The Prototypes come to prominence with the big euphoric dancefloor track ‘Suffocate’ on Shogun Audio. which received support from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Andy C, Roni Size, Friction, J Majik & Wickaman, Pendulum, and DJ Fresh.
2013 saw the duo sign an album deal with Futurebound’s Viper Recordings. The first single from the album ‘Pale Blue Dot’ held the No 1 spot on the Beatport dnb chart for over a month with DJ support from Netsky, Chase & Status, Pendulum, Sub Focus, Sigma, TC, & more.
2014 has seen them go from strength to strength with ‘Just Bounce’ featured on Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ album, the duo being signed to Primary Talent Agency and a summer residency on BBC Xtra Talent. The live gigs have grown with tours across the US, Australia, NZ, South Africa and Japan.
2015 and The Prototypes released their debut album ‘City of Gold’ in May on Viper Recordings featuring vocals from Ayak, Donae’o, Ayah Marar, Laconic, MAD HEAD CITY and Amy Pearson. The City of Gold album tour encompass over 50 dates and will see the guys playing at NASS, Urban Art Forms and the Tomorrowland festivals.
It’s not hard to see why the future has never been brighter for one of the most exciting production outfits in recent years.

The event will also feature FOUR of Malaysia’s best in drum’n’bass, including Loops Collective founder DJ Low, and fellow collective members Ken DMA, Mac and Yikzz.
DJ Low: Club event promoter, DJ academy owner and Malaysian drum’n’bass pioneer, DJ Low has been in the forefront of the local clubbing industry for 18 years now and under the Loops Collective banner, which he co-founded in 1999, chalks up a hefty list of A-grade artistes in the genre who have graced out shores this year, including the likes of Andy C, LTJ Bukem, Alix Perez and Black Sun Empire. House wise, he’s co-founded the House of Chemistry nights and he’s also label head to the now increasingly active Take Off Records, which is beginning to see releases in the music range of beats, bass, drum’n’bass, house, breaks and more.

Belgian techno specialist Amelie Lens is returning to Asia for a short December touring spell covering Asia and Australia with appearances in Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok penned in.
Amelie Lens has been taking the scene by storm ever since releasing her solid debut EP on the Italian Lyase Recordings. The title track Exhale quickly began living it’s own life as a very recognisable and uptempo floorfiller, and the name Exhale acts as a brand name for quality club nights that will produce and capture the beauty of form and harmony found in techno music.
